Fishing Kiama NSW

Fishing in Kiama is enjoyable and quite popular. There is many forms of fishing that can be done in the Kiama NSW district from freshwater to saltwater. We have some great rock fishing, game fishing, reef fishing, beach fishing, river fishing and bass fishing in the upper reaches of the rivers.

Rock Fishing

Kiama is a popular rock fishing spot - particularly from Kiama Blowhole Point rocks. Here you can catch a wide range of fish species. In the summer months it is common for many peope to try their luck at live baiting for fish such as black marlin, tuna, kingfish, cobia and more. Also ppoular is fishing or spinning with metal fishing lures. such as Raider Lures and Halco lures. You can often spin up Kingfish, Mackerel, Bonito, Taior, Salmon and more. On the southern side of the blowhole point squid is pleantiful and you can catch some good numbers for either bait or to eat. Using a prawn style squid jig or squid pole will deffinately do the trick at catching some of these guys.

Kiama Blowhole is not the only popular rock fishing spot. Spots that also produce quite well are The southern rock point of Surf Beach for salmon and tailor and between the northen end of Easts Beach and the Little blowhole (marsdens headland) is also great for many fish species including snapper.

Game Fishing

Kiama has some great game fishing both offshore and Land Based. - more particularly from September through to May. For Game fishing off the boats, We often see captures from the Kiama Canyons and from around the Mount Fuji fish traps species such as: Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Albacore Tuna, King Fish, Dolphin Fish and a range of sharks. Most commonly used tackle for game fishing in the area is 15-24kg tackle. Trolling lures such as Skirted lures, Xmas Tree Lures, Bibless minnow lures, Rapala lures and Squidgies blue water live series soft plastic lures all work well.  Land Base Game fishing is also quite popular off Kiama Blowhole point and Marsdens Headland with the use of live baits floated out under a balloon.

Reef Fishing

Off Kiama Reefs you can catch many fish species. Some of the more popular targets are Snapper and Morwong. Along the sand flats just out of the kiama harbour and accross to minnamurra - Bass point it can often pay to stay in close and drift as when the flathead are around there is sure to be a good number!

If you are visiting the area Kiama has a few charter boats that operate out of Kiama harboour. The skippers know the good fishing spots and will put you onto some good catches should you book a trip with them.

Beach Fishing

Kiama Has several beaches all of which seem to fish very well. Bombo beach is the biggest of the lot in the kiama district and can fish well particulary in the warmer months on a high tide for bream, whiting, dart and more. Best baits to use for these fish are beach worms, pipis or you can also try your luck with bio baits (soft lures) such as Berkley Gulp Worms. Other beaches in the are that can produce fish are Jones beach, Surf beach, Kendalls Beach and Easts beach. Further south 10 minutes out of Kiama in Gerringong Gerroa are also some beaches that will produce well.

River Fishing

Kiama is home to Minnamurra River which will fish well for flathead throughout the river from the mouth right back to the golf course. Bream are often a popular target and can be often caught around the road and train bridges or from the wooden platforms built facing the west opposit the golf course.

In the upper reaches of the Minnamurra river is great for bass fishing. Usally from september to may you can get the Bass on Diving lures or surface lures. When there are pleanty of bugs around just on dark using a surface lure should produce some fish. We strongly recommend Catch and Release for Australian Bass.

Another Place bass can be found in our area is Jerrara dam located in Jamberoo. Several Years ago NSW Fisheries / The Department of primary industries stocked the dam with several thousand bass.
